Gareth Southgate has resisted the urge to make significant changes to his England team ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Malta, but the addition of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace brings a new perspective.

Both contests will feature England as overwhelming favorites, so it would have been reasonable for Southgate to rest some of his team’s top players after a demanding season that includes the World Cup in Qatar before Christmas.

Instead, Southgate’s squad has a recognizable look as England gets ready for their trip to Malta and their match against North Macedonia at Old Trafford. This comes after they began their quest to qualify for the Euros in Germany next summer by defeating Italy and the Ukraine at home.

The most notable development is Eze’s first call-up to the senior team, which is a well-deserved reward for the 24-year-old who has thrived at Crystal Palace under Roy Hodgson, one of Southgate’s England predecessors, where he has six goals in his past eight appearances.
