Despite placing 55th, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre took second place.

Aberg, who won by two shots on 19 under, is hoping to be one of captain Luke Donald’s six wildcard selections on Monday.

Fellow Swede Alexander Bjork came in second, capitalizing on overnight leader Fitzpatrick’s late troubles in Crans-sur-Sierre.

The 29-year-old Englishman hit three bogeys in the final four holes, ending his aspirations of tying Spanish great Seve Ballesteros for the most wins in the event, which he had won twice previously.

Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Tyrrell Hatton had all risen through the European and global points rankings to secure selection for Europe’s squad prior to this weekend.

Last Tuesday, the United States announced their 12-man squad for the encounter in Rome on September 29th and October 1st.

MacIntyre’s participation in the Italian city will be his first for Europe as he finished third on the European points list, beating out Yannik Paul, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, Rasmus Hojgaard, and Adrian Otaegui.

“I am so excited,” the 27-year-old added. “It’s been a difficult qualifying campaign, but I’m pleased with how I’ve handled it and to have earned one of the six automatic spots.”

“I worked hard to get to the Ryder Cup, but now it’s critical that we win it.”

Fitzpatrick will compete for Europe at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club for the third time, having previously competed in the United States in 2016 and 2021.

The big issue now is who Donald will choose on Monday, however it would be a huge surprise if Aberg, who only turned professional in June, was not chosen with Fleetwood, Justin Rose, and Shane Lowry, leaving two positions open.

Aberg started the final round two strokes behind Fitzpatrick and was three shots down when the Englishman birdied the 13th.

But Aberg stormed to the top of the scoreboard with four birdies in a row starting on the 14th.

“I figured winning would put me in a good position [for the Ryder Cup], but honestly, I’ve been doing a pretty good job of not thinking about it too much,” the 23-year-old remarked.

“Of course, it would mean everything. As a young golfer growing up in Sweden and Europe, those are the events you aspire to be a part of, and if I ever get the chance to do so, I’ll be overjoyed. It would be fantastic.”
