During his team’s 1-1 draw with Monza on Wednesday, Roma manager Jose Mourinho says he wore a microphone to “protect” himself from “the worst referee I have ever met in my life.”

After sending off Roma’s Mehmet Zeki Celik in the 96th minute, Mourinho slammed referee Daniele Chiffi.

This season, he has got three red cards for clashes with referees, including one from Chiffi in September.

“I brought a microphone to the game.” Mourinho stated, “I recorded everything.”

“I protected myself from the moment I left the locker room until the moment I returned.”

“He’s the worst,” says Cheffi. He’s a disaster on paper. There is no empathy. There is no communication. There is no consciousness.

“Another yellow to a player who slips in the 96th minute… I quit working around 20-30 minutes before the end since I knew he’d give me a red card for anything.

“I didn’t give him the chance; I said no, that’s enough.”

The initial goal by Stephan El Shaarawy was cancelled out by Monza’s Luca Caldirola, leaving Roma eighth in Serie A and outside the European qualification places on goal difference.

“Believe me, I have dealt with many bad referees,” Mourinho stated. “When I talk about referees, it’s usually because they have a direct impact on the game.”

“He is horrible; he has no human connection with anyone, no empathy; at the 96th minute, he shows a red card to a player who slips because he is exhausted.”

“Unfortunately, this, too, is a sign of Roma’s weakness as a club, because we lack the strength of other clubs that can say, ‘We don’t want this referee,'” he said.
