Sport pays homage to King Charles III’s coronation.

On the day of King Charles III’s coronation, sport paid respect to him.

Before football and cricket matches around the country, players queued up while the national anthem was performed.

Similar tributes were staged before Saturday’s final round of rugby union Premiership games, which were pushed back to 16:00 BST to allow fans to enjoy the festivities.

There were also special ceremonies at the Newmarket horse racing meeting and the Badminton Horse Trials.

Football’s tribute to King Charles III began on Friday, during Arsenal’s Women’s Super League match against Leicester at Boreham Wood, when players surrounded the center circle to sing the national song.

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr, an Australian international, was picked to carry her country’s flag and lead the Australian delegation into Westminster Abbey in London before the coronation ceremony on Saturday.

The national song was later played before four Premier League matches that began at 15:00 BST, including Manchester City vs. Leeds, Bournemouth vs. Chelsea, Tottenham vs. Crystal Palace, and Wolves vs. Aston Villa.

Manchester City’s game at Etihad Stadium was originally scheduled for an early televised kickoff, but it was rescheduled to avoid a clash with the crowning ceremony after the Premier League agreed to modify broadcast blackout restrictions.

Liverpool will also play the national song before their encounter against Brentford at 17:30 BST, despite the fact that the club is aware that certain fans “have strong feelings about it.”

‘Abide With Me’ and ‘God Save The Queen’ were booed by a segment of the club’s fan base before to last season’s FA Cup final.

Cricketers stood while God Save the King was played before Saturday’s County Championship and Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy games.
