During Napoli’s Serie A celebrations, a man dies from gunshot wounds.

A 26-year-old man died as a consequence of gunshot wounds sustained during soccer fans’ celebrations in Naples, Italy, after Napoli won its first Serie A title in 33 years on Thursday, according to Napoli Police.

According to authorities, the man died at the Cardarelli hospital in Naples.

Police said they were looking into whether the shooting, which injured at least two others, was accidental or purposeful. A half-dozen people were also sent to the hospital with fireworks-related injuries, they said.

Thousands of people rejoiced across Italy on Thursday after Napoli won the Italian Serie A title with a 1-1 draw against Udinese.

The club’s first league triumph since 1990, when the late Diego Maradona – after whom the team’s home stadium in Naples is named – guided Napoli to the Scudetto.

It’s only the third time Napoli has won Serie A, and the victory provoked wild celebrations among the team’s players as well as the city’s fans, many of whom had gathered at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
