As part of a survey to assess average passenger weight, Air New Zealand is measuring passengers before they board overseas flights.

According to the company, the weight would be anonymously stored in a database but will not be accessible to airline personnel or other passengers.

According to Air New Zealand, knowing the average passenger weight will increase fuel economy in the future.

The airline also stated that participation in the survey is entirely voluntary.

In 2021, the airline previously weighed domestic passengers in New Zealand.

“Now that international travel is back up and running, it’s time for international flyers to weigh in,” said the airline in a news release.

Prior to the epidemic, the airline carried over 17 million passengers per year on 3,400 flights per week.

Knowing the weight of everything on its plane is a “regulatory requirement,” according to airline spokesman Alastair James in a video.

More than 10,000 customers traveling on Air New Zealand’s overseas network will be asked to participate in the study.

Passengers on some aircraft departing from Auckland International Airport between May 29 and July 2 will be weighed at the gate.

The airline stated that everything on its aircraft is weighed, from cargo and onboard meals to luggage in the hold, and that it used average weights based on survey data for customers, personnel, and cabin bags.

Air New Zealand is the country’s national airline, with 104 aircraft in service.
