Coco Gauff, an American youngster, advanced to the Roland Garros quarterfinals, setting up a rematch of last year’s French Open final with Iga Swiatek.

Gauff, the sixth seed, defeated Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-5 6-2 and could face top seed Swiatek next.

Swiatek of Poland will play Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko later on Monday for a third clay crown.

Ons Jabeur of Tunisia advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time with a 6-3 6-1 victory against Bernarda Pera.

Jabeur reached the Wimbledon and US Open championships in 2022, but he was knocked out in the first round of Roland Garros last year.

After defeating Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo, seventh seed Jabeur, 28, will face Brazilian 14th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final eight.

Gauff claimed there was “no point in revisiting” last year’s setback against Swiatek when she returned to Roland Garros a year after her first Grand Slam singles final.

She would rather “reset” rather than “dwell” on the experience.

What she gained from that defeat may become clear if she meets world number one Swiatek again.

Gauff has been far from convincing so far in this year’s event, twice fighting back from a set down in earlier stages and also overcoming adversity against the 100th-ranked Schmiedlova.

Gauff took a 5-2 lead after a solid start, but she became tight trying to close off the opening set, and Schmiedlova rallied back to 5-5.

Schmiedlova dropped service again, giving Gauff another chance to win the opener, which she grabbed with a strong hold to love.

Gauff also gave up an early break in the second set, but after digging deep to hold for 2-2, he claimed the remaining four games to advance to the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the third year in a row.

The final game, on the other hand, was more tense.

Back-to-back double faults gave Schmiedlova two break points, and Gauff will know that the biggest tests of where her game is still to come – possibly against Swiatek on Wednesday.

Jabeur has now reached the quarter-finals of all four Grand Slam events, after finally having a deeper run at the major event she grew up watching.

Pera, who is 28 and playing in her first Grand Slam last-16 encounter, battled to hold serve on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Jabeur was not at her best and was broken three times in the first set and once more at the opening of the second, but she sped through the final six games to win in 63 minutes.

“I never thought about something missing or not reaching all four of them,” she stated after finishing the series of big quarter-finals.

“Perhaps it’s a good thing. It arrived, and we’re hoping to set it to all semi-finals and eventually all finals.”

Haddad Maia, 27, fought back from a set down to win 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 7-5 in a three-hour and 51-minute marathon – the longest match on the WTA Tour in 2023.

Haddad Maia failed to convert three match points in the ninth game of the deciding set, then served for the victory before having her serve broken to tie the match at 5-5.

However, she went on to win the following two games to complete the victory.

“I think the emotion was there for both of us,” Haddad Maia explained. “I’m very happy and proud that I didn’t give up and pushed until I reached my limit, and I think I deserved it because of that.”

Sorribes Tormo and partner Marie Bouzkova won their women’s doubles last-16 match on Sunday when opponent Miyu Kato smacked a ball girl with a ball and both the Japanese player and Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified.

The umpire initially issued a warning to Kato, but following challenges from Sorribes Tormo and Bouzkova, they were disqualified.
