After being stabbed in Milan before a Champions League match, a Newcastle United fan is in stable condition.

The fan was stabbed three times in the arm and once in the back, but he is scheduled to be released from the hospital on Tuesday.

At around midnight, police were called to an incident in the famed nightlife district of Navigli.

Newcastle meet AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday at 17:45 BST at the San Siro.

“The victim was with a friend when they encountered a group of seven/eight other people,” police said. It is unknown whether this gathering consisted of Italians or foreigners.

“The state police have launched an investigation to determine exactly what happened, the motive, and those responsible.”

“Many Newcastle fans have arrived in the city of Milan, and this is the only reported incident.”

Newcastle stated they were “deeply concerned” by the accusations and were working with local authorities to figure out what was going on.

“Our thoughts are with the supporter and their family, and we hope for a full and speedy recovery,” the club stated.

Newcastle will play in their first Champions League game in 20 years after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season to qualify.
