Barbie: Mattel wants to make more movies because toy sales are down.

The California company said its sales for the three months ending in June were down by 12%.

In future Hollywood movies, Mattel’s brands, like Barney, Hot Wheels, and Polly Pocket, will also be seen.

Ynon Kriez, the CEO of Mattel, said in the company’s earnings presentation that Barbie shows how good Mattel movies could be.

“This is a big deal for Mattel and a great way to show how our IP [intellectual property] fits into culture,” he said.

Mattel hasn’t said if it will make money directly from the Barbie movie yet, but it has already put out a soundtrack record and teamed up with more than 165 companies to sell products related to the movie.

The company’s net income for the period was $27 million, which was more than Wall Street expected, even though it was down by almost 60% from the same time last year.

Mattel’s shares have gone up by almost 16% in the last month, but after the earnings report, they went down by 1.8% in extended trading in New York.

In the Barbie movie, played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the main character and her best friend Ken try to figure out who they are.

Mr. Kriez told the BBC earlier this month that he wanted to make a “Mattel universe” so that it would be as successful as Marvel.

Disney’s Marvel world is where dozens of blockbuster movies take place. Characters like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America are part of this universe.

Mattel’s stock of well-known brands includes Bob the Builder, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Uno, in addition to its best-selling brand Barbie.

Also on Wednesday, Mattel said that Richard Dickson, its chief operating officer, would be leaving the company.
