Chelsea has signed Axel Disasi, a French defender, to a six-year deal.

Disasi, who is 25 years old, fills in on defense at Stamford Bridge after Wesley Fofana hurt his knee badly.

Last season, he played in all 38 of Monaco’s Ligue 1 games.

Disasi told Chelsea’s website, “I’m really proud to be a part of this great family.”

“I hope to accomplish a lot here. To get awards. I will do everything in my power to reach those goals. I have a lot of goals.”

The Blues and Brighton have agreed on a fee for goalie Robert Sanchez, while the Seagulls have turned down several offers for Sanchez’s teammate Moises Caicedo.

Disasi has played four times for France, including as a replacement in the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won. He has also played 129 times for Monaco since August 2020, when he moved there from Stade de Reims.

The center-back is Chelsea’s sixth signing of the summer, joining Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Lesley Ugochukwu, Angelo Gabriel, and Diego Moreira. This is part of new boss Mauricio Pochettino’s plan to change the team’s style.

Disasi will compete with central defenders Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill, who signed a new contract on August 2, for a starting spot. Disasi’s countryman Benoit Badiashile will miss the start of the Premier League season with a hamstring injury, and Fofana is expected to be out for several months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

“I can’t wait to feel the energy of the fans,” Disasi said.

“What gets me excited about the Premier League is how passionate the fans are, how loud the games are, and how intense they are.”

Chelsea’s preseason games ended on Sunday with a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago. This meant that they went through their entire US tour without losing a game. Now, all eyes are on their first Premier League game of 2023-24, which will be at home against Liverpool on August 13.

Pochettino’s job is to rebuild the team and try to do much better in the Premier League than last year, when they finished in 12th place.

So far this summer, the club has lost Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ethan Ampadu, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Abdul Rahman Baba, and former captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said on the club’s website, “Axel has shown his quality over several seasons in France, which is why he has been recognized on the international scene.

“He’s ready to move up in his future, and we’re glad it will be with Chelsea. We’re glad to have him on board and can’t wait for him to meet Mauricio Pochettino and his new teammates.
