Edson Alvarez: West Ham are likely to sign the Ajax and Mexico midfielder for about £35 million.

Edson Alvarez, a midfielder from Mexico, will have a physical today before becoming West Ham’s first signing of the summer.

The Hammers have been interested in Alvarez for some time, and an agreement has been reached with Ajax on a transaction for roughly £35 million.

The 25-year-old was a key member of Mexico’s team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States this summer, and he is seen as a potential replacement for Declan Rice, despite his strengths being primarily as a defensive midfielder.

If no complications arise, formal confirmation of the transfer is likely on Wednesday.

Alvarez has recently returned to Ajax to begin pre-season training.

The news of Alvarez’s anticipated arrival will be welcomed by Hammers manager David Moyes, who has failed to bring in reinforcements this summer following Rice’s departure to Arsenal.

West Ham have also made proposals for Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, however neither player is guaranteed to leave the club.
