England defeats Australia 1-0: Can Ollie Watkins fill in for Harry Kane?

Ollie Watkins scored again, 563 days after his previous England appearance and goal.

With the winner in Friday’s otherwise low-key friendly with Australia, the in-form Aston Villa striker took advantage of his long-awaited opportunity to impress Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate once more.

“It has been a long time coming,” Watkins said to Channel 4.

“I’ve been waiting for the next call-up for a long time.” I was looking forward to it, and I wasn’t going to let this chance pass me by.

“I knew I wasn’t going to come off this pitch without the goal, that was in my mind.”

Has Watkins now risen to the front of the line to be Harry Kane’s backup striker?
