In Paris, the goalkeeper Donnarumma and his partner were attacked and robbed.

French police sources told the media that the couple was attacked by multiple individuals and held captive in their eighth district apartment.

They then supposedly took refuge in a nearby motel.

The pair was brought to the hospital after the hotel personnel raised the alarm.

A representative for the Paris prosecutor’s office informed the BBC, “an investigation has been opened on charges of armed robbery in an organized gang and aggravated violence following the events that took place overnight at Mr Donnarumma’s place.”

The thieves reportedly made off with jewelry, watches, and luxury leather goods to the tune of €500,000 (£430,000), according to unverified allegations on the news website Actu17.

According to Agence France-Presse reports, the football player suffered minor injuries while his model girlfriend Alessia Elefante remained unscathed.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, 24, and his partner “are in shock at what happened but doing well under the terrible circumstances,” according to a statement released by his agent. Both have been cooperating with police investigations.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the French BRB police unit dedicated to combating armed robberies and burglaries had launched an inquiry.

Two years ago, the goalie made the transfer to the French capital, and on Friday, he was scheduled to join the Paris St. Germain squad in advance of the team’s first preseason friendly encounter against Le Havre and a tour of Japan and South Korea.

Gangs have attacked other PSG players before, so he is not the first, but most of the other attacks have happened when the player was not at home.

Two men were sentenced to prison in January for a robbery that occurred at the residence of Brazilian footballer Marquinhos in Yvelines, west of Paris, in March 2021.

While Marquinhos was outside playing, his father and two adolescent daughters were home. The dad took some blows to the face and ribs but escaped unscathed.

Angel Di Maria, a teammate of Marquinhos’, had his home broken into on the same day. Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, and Eric Choupo-Moting aren’t the only PSG players to have their lockers broken into.

Famous football players have also been the target of gang violence in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Eran Zahavi, a striker for the PSV football team, was attacked in his Amsterdam home last year, and his wife and children were held hostage. His home was broken into again a few months later.

During the World Cup in Qatar last December, Raheem Sterling had to return home to Surrey as his house was broken into. When he lived in Cheshire in 2018, he was already a victim of burglary.
