Tour de France 2023: A selfie-taking fan causes a disaster on stage 15

A fan taking a picture triggered a disaster on stage 15 of the Tour de France, knocking roughly 20 cyclists off their bikes.

With roughly 125 kilometers to go, Team Jumbo-Visma rider Sepp Kuss had his handlebars knocked off by a spectator holding out a phone.

Kuss collided with teammate Nathan van Hooydonck, who slid from his bike and crashed behind him.

Six riders were forced to abandon stage 14 on Saturday due to collisions.

All of the riders who were involved in the incident on Sunday’s 179km stage from Les Gets les Portes du Soleil to Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, including 2019 champion Egan Bernal, were able to continue.

Jonas Vingegaard, who leads the overall standings, and second-placed Tadej Pogacar were unaffected.

Team Jumbo-Visma tweeted, “Please be always aware when watching cycling on the side of the road.”

The Tour de France’s official Twitter account uploaded a slow-motion video showing a rider ducking beneath a spectator’s outstretched arm shortly after the incident, with the message: “Please pay attention to the riders.”

“Please be cautious,” Team Confidis added on Twitter. So that the celebration remains a party for both the runners and you. You don’t need a cell phone to make unforgettable memories.”
