Wyndham Clark defeats Rory McIlroy to win his first major title in Los Angeles in 2023.

Wyndham Clark of the United States defeated Rory McIlroy to win the US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.

The 29-year-old shot a level-par 70 to win his first major and the $3.6 million (£2.8 million) winner’s cheque at 10 under par, one stroke ahead of McIlroy.

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, finished third, two strokes down.

Rickie Fowler, the joint overnight leader, ended in a tie for fifth place with a five-over 75.

Fowler’s bogey at the 18th was one of seven on the day as he faded to finish a stroke behind reigning Open champion Cameron Smith, who birdied three holes on the back nine amid a late surge.

Min Woo Lee of Australia and Tommy Fleetwood of England both finished on five under par, with the Englishman making eagles on the sixth and 14th holes on his way to the lowest score of the day, a seven-under 63.

The 32-year-old, who also made four birdies, created history by becoming the first player to shoot 63 twice in the US Open and the fourth player to do so after Greg Norman, Vijay Singh, and Brooke Koepka.
