7-35 New Zealand South Africa: Springboks hand All Blacks a record defeat as Scott Barrett is sent off

Barrett received two yellow cards, the second for a reckless clearout to the head of hooker Malcolm Marx, for which he was referred to the TMO’bunker’.

South Africa took the lead with tries from Siya Kolisi and Kurt-Lee Arendse, followed by tries from Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, and Kwagga Smith in the second half.

The previous record loss for the All Blacks was by 21 points in 1999 and 2019.

Barrett drew his first yellow card at Twickenham after repeated team infringements as the All Blacks battled to handle the Springboks’ unrelenting power game.

He returned from the sin-bin, but just before halftime, he shoulder-charged into Marx, who was near the ground in a coma, forcing referee Matthew Carley to send him off.

With Barrett becoming the first All Black to be sent off twice, New Zealand has already lost seasoned lock Brodie Retallick for the opening game of the World Cup against France on September 8 due to injury.

Tyrel Lomax’s World Cup hopes may also be jeopardized as the prop departed the game early due to a serious knee injury.

The world champions made it back-to-back victories after a 52-16 thrashing of Wales in Cardiff last weekend, as Jacques Nienaber’s side appears to be peaking ahead of their World Cup opening against Scotland on September 10th.

South Africa’s power game, which was so effective at the 2019 World Cup, was too much for their 14-man opponents, ending New Zealand’s 11-match unbeaten streak.

“You couldn’t help but be impressed with what they did, they really got stuck into us,” All Blacks coach Ian Foster said.

“Their physicality and set-piece were excellent, and they had a huge game at scrum and line-out time.” That was a significant change.”
