AI was declared the Collins Dictionary word of the year.

Collins Dictionary editors named artificial intelligence (AI) the “word of the year” in 2023 due to its increasing influence over humankind, or at least the rise in discussions about whether AI will bring about revolutionary change or cataclysmic destruction.

This year, the publisher claims, the term’s usage has increased fourfold.

While Ulez and ultraprocessed were among the other competitors, Collins Managing Director Alex Beecroft claimed that AI had become “the talking point of 2023”.

He continued: “We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology.”
