Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will miss the next two games due to minor back surgery.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will miss his team’s next two Premier League games due to back surgery.

Guardiola, 52, had been suffering from “severe” back pain, according to City, and had traveled to Barcelona for a “emergency” but “minor” procedure.

City go to Sheffield United on Sunday before hosting Fulham at Etihad Stadium on September 2nd.

Guardiola is likely to return to the field following the international break.

In Guardiola’s absence, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will take over first-team training and will lead from the sidelines during games.

The operation, performed by Dr Mireia Illueca, was declared a “success,” and the Treble-winning manager will “recover and rehabilitate in Barcelona.”

“Everyone at Manchester City wishes Pep a speedy recovery and looks forward to seeing him back in Manchester soon,” the statement continued.

Last season, Guardiola led the club to the Premier League, FA Cup, and their first Champions League triumph.

After beating Burnley and Newcastle in their first two games, City is currently second in the Premier League, tied on six points with leaders Brighton and Arsenal in third.

They also won the Uefa Super Cup last week, defeating Europa League champions Sevilla 5-4 on penalties in Athens.
