Moeen Ali says England has a “good chance” of winning the third Ashes Test in 2023.

Moeen got rid of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to get to 200 Test wickets. At the end of the day, the visitors were ahead by 142 runs, with a score of 116-4.

England was earlier bowled out for 237 after captain Ben Stokes played another heroic game by hitting 80 runs to save his team from being down 142-7.

“We have a good chance,” Moeen said.

He said this on Test Match Special. “It’s good that the day turned out well and that we’re still in a position to win.”

Australia has won two of the first three games in the series.

Stokes is in charge of England’s fight to stay in the Ashes.
How day two went at Headingley: Moeen, who came out of retirement to replace the injured Jack Leach in this series, said that Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum have given the team faith that they can chase down any total.

Since Stokes and McCullum took over last year, England has reached difficult goals of 378, 299, 296 and 277, and Stokes was a big reason why they were able to reach 359 against Australia at Headingley in 2019.

“Whatever they get, we’ll have to try to get it back,” Moeen said. “It’s still a good wicket,” he said.

“We have some great players, and the outfield is fast, so it takes a few people to get in. I don’t know what the score is, but from where we are, we’d like to go for 260.”

Sir Alastair Cook, who used to be captain of England, told BBC Sport, “England will be able to chase 270. We keep saying that the cricket pitch is really fair because it looks flat, but no one has found it easy to play except for Mitchell Marsh.

“This pitch has gotten better and better over the last few years, and teams have done well chasing here, but 270, with the Ashes on the line and the pressure on, is the number.”

Australia’s leader, Pat Cummins, said, “Everything is in place for another great match.

“It would be good to aim for 300. But we bowl well, and we’re hoping the ball will start to spin. We’ll try to protect against anything.”

‘I’m pleased to reach 200’

England was still 121 runs behind Australia when Mark Wood started a comeback by scoring 24 runs in just eight deliveries. Stokes then played another one of his blistering knocks, which helped cut England’s first-innings gap to 26 runs.

“We were struggling with the bat until Stokes and Wood let loose and gave us a chance,” Moeen said.

When Australia got to 68-1 and had a lead of 94, the game turned again. However, Moeen took the key wickets of Labuschagne and Smith in consecutive overs, and Chris Woakes got rid of Usman Khawaja.

Moeen is only the third England spinner after Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann to get 200 wickets in Tests.

He said, “I’m glad to reach 200.” “Those two wickets were a bit lucky, but I bowled pretty well overall.”

“I didn’t think I’d get any wickets on this because when I bowled in the first game, it didn’t spin much, but today was good because I tried to be aggressive and attack.
