Ons Jabeur wins the Charleston Open after defeating Belinda Bencic.

At the Charleston Open, world number five Ons Jabeur defeated Belinda Bencic to win her first title of the season.

Tunisia’s Jabeur, who finished second at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022, defeated the Swiss 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

On Sunday, defending champion Bencic played two matches, finishing a rain-delayed semi-final against Jessica Pegula before facing Jabeur.

Jabeur’s fourth WTA title, and his second on clay.

Jabeur has had a difficult start to the season and has battled injury since her second-round exit at the Australian Open in January.

She recovered from a break down in the first set against Bencic before holding her nerve in the second to win the title.

She has now won 37 clay-court matches since the start of the 2020 season, the most of any WTA Tour player in that time period.

Casper Ruud, world number five, defeated Miomir Kecmanovic to win the Estoril Open, his first title of the year.

The world number five won the first set in five games before Serb Kecmanovic, ranked 40th in the world, forced a tie-break in the second.

However, the 24-year-old Norwegian held on to win 6-1 7-6 (7-3) in Portugal, putting an end to his dismal start to the year.

Prior to this week, the runner-up from last year’s French Open and US Open had only won five of his 11 games in 2023.

Ruud’s tenth career title, however, will be enough to propel him back to fourth in the ATP rankings on Monday.
