‘Pressure is on’ England U21s with a semi-final position on the line

The Young Lions have enjoyed an outstanding start to the competition in Georgia.

England topped their group after three straight 2-0 victories.

“If we can create an environment where they can express themselves, we’ve got some of the best young players in Europe,” Carsley added.

“If they are given the opportunity on a consistent basis, they can demonstrate it.” Half of the battle is believing in them. Make a platform for them to build and attack on. That is success in my opinion: good players who can perform when it counts.

“It’s a big test, and the stakes are high.” We have 120 minutes to do it. We’ve planned for everything, and maybe we’ll be able to deliver once more.

“I don’t think we’ve had cabin fever and are ready to leave. I still believe there is a lot more to come from the team. I believe they can advance to different levels.

“We’ve clearly concentrated on going the distance. I don’t believe the guys are thinking beyond this game. Hopefully, we’ll be there for the long haul.”

England will be missing Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot, who has departed the camp to attend a pre-arranged family event.

Tommy Doyle, a Manchester City midfielder, is also doubtful for the match at the Ramaz Shengelia Stadium in Kutaisi due to a knock on his knee sustained in training.

The match can be viewed for free on the Uefa website, although no UK broadcaster has yet secured the rights to televise England’s matches.

“It’s a little bit frustrating because you always want to showcase the next generation,” Carsley explained.

“It would have been fantastic if more people could have seen what the next senior internationals look like.” We’re hoping that if we keep moving forward, we’ll gain a little more coverage.”

If England defeats Portugal on Sunday, they will face either hosts Georgia or Israel, both of whom they have already defeated in Group C.

The match will be contested on Wednesday, July 5, at the Batumi Arena, with the final on July 8 at the same venue.
