Rasmus Hojlund: Manchester United agree to sign the Danish striker from Atalanta for £72 million.

Manchester United have agreed a £72 million fee with Serie A club Atalanta for Denmark international attacker Rasmus Hojlund.

The 20-year-old will join Manchester United for a cost of £64 million, with an additional £8 million in add-ons.

Hojlund joined Atalanta in August 2022 and made 34 appearances last season, scoring 10 goals.

His deal with United will be for five years, with an option for an extra season.

Hojlund will be United boss Erik ten Hag’s third signing of the summer, following midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55 million and Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana for £47.2 million.

Despite United’s efforts to keep the sum around £60 million, Hojlund was Ten Hag’s first choice for the striker position.

United had backed away from a move for Tottenham forward Harry Kane, deciding that a deal for the England captain would be too costly and difficult to accomplish.

Although there is still work to be done to complete the Hojlund transfer, personal terms are not expected to be an issue.

It means Ten Hag fulfills his wish of having a forward in before the start of the season, with United believing that Mount, Onana, and Hojlund have completed the majority of their summer transfer activity.

It brings their total spend to a minimum of £166.2 million, with the potential to grow to £180 million.

Paris St-Germain, the Ligue 1 winners, were also said to be interested in Hojlund as a possible replacement for France captain Kyllian Mbappe, whose future is uncertain.

The Dane began his senior career with Copenhagen, making his Danish Superliga debut in 2020 at the age of 17, before moving to Austrian club Sturm Graz two years later.
