The IOC says that climate change will make it harder for some countries to host snow sports events at the Winter Olympics.

The Winter Olympics and Paralympics hosts for 2030 and 2034 will be chosen the night before the 2024 Games in Paris.

“The Future Host Commission has begun to address this very troubling situation,” said Thomas Bach, head of the IOC.

Beijing 2022 was the first Olympics to use almost entirely fake snow.

In the 1980s, winter sports were the first to use fake snow.

Climate change is threatening “the very existence” of high-performance sports, according to the head of UK Sport. Artificial snow was used in some way at Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014, and Pyeongchang 2018. It was also used at an all-time high in China’s capital last year.

For the ski slopes, more than 100 snow makers and 300 snow-making guns were put to work right away.

“From these numbers, it becomes even clearer that we need to address very quickly these dramatic impacts of climate change on winter sport,”added Bach.

“The early projections already show that we need to change the Olympic Winter Games to account for the effects of climate change.”

“This implies deliberations on a rotation system, the composition of the programme, the different needs for sports on ice and snow, and many others.”

Bach had earlier played down the idea of a double award for the Winter and Paralympic Games in 2030 and 2034. He also said that the IOC executive board would have a focused conversation with the potential hosts from November 28 to December 1.

Some of the places that want to host the 2030 Games are Salt Lake City in the US, Sweden, Switzerland, and France.
