Wales 40-6 Australia: Warren Gatland’s team defeats the Wallabies to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals.

Wales became the first team to reach the 2023 World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Australia in Lyon.

Gareth Anscombe booted 23 points, while tries from Gareth Davies, Nick Tompkins, and Jac Morgan secured a spot in the final eight with one game remaining in Pool C.

Ben Donaldson scored two penalties for Australia.

Eddie Jones’ team is on the verge of being the first Australian team to be eliminated in the pool round.

Wales, who are celebrating their fourth consecutive World Cup quarter-final qualifying under Warren Gatland as head coach, humiliated the hapless Wallabies.

This has to be one of Wales’ best performances under the New Zealander, as the scoreline surpasses their previous best win against Australia, a 28-3 victory in 1975.

Captain Morgan was brilliant once again, as were number eight Taulupe Faletau and scrum-half Gareth Davies.

Wales’ only setback came from a troubling injury that forced talismanic fly-half Dan Biggar off in the first half, but his absence allowed Anscombe to shine with six penalties, a conversion, and a drop-goal.

Wales would officially finish as group champions if they defeat Georgia on October 7 in Nantes, but only two match points are necessary.

This would likely set up a quarter-final matchup against Argentina, Japan, or Samoa in Marseille the following weekend, with England clearly the favorites to win Pool D.
