West Ham sign ex-Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart.

Mavropanos, 25, has joined the Hammers on a five-year deal and will wear the number 15 shirt.

He joined Arsenal in January 2018 but only appeared in seven Premier League games before being loaned away.

“I’m really looking forward to the next step in my career,” he stated. “I’ll give anything for the shirt.”

Mavropanos, who has 19 Greece caps, is West Ham’s third acquisition of the summer, after midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez from Southampton and Ajax, respectively.

He appeared 34 times in all competitions for Stuttgart last season, as the German club narrowly escaped relegation, and made 89 appearances for them total, scoring eight goals.

Mavropanos joined the Bundesliga club on a season-long loan from Arsenal in July 2020, which was extended for a second season before being made permanent.

Hammers manager David Moyes believes Mavropanos will create competition for the club’s current defenders.

“I’m pleased to welcome Konstantinos to West Ham,” the 60-year-old Scot remarked.

“We were looking to strengthen our centre-half options this summer, so it’s great that we were able to bring in an international defender of his caliber.”

“We’re really looking forward to integrating him into the group.”

West Ham, who had struggled to bring in replacements after selling midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal, have now signed Ward-Prowse, Alvarez, and Mavropanos in the previous two weeks.

The Hammers were interested in signing Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, but the deal fell through. The England defender, 30, was destined to move after the clubs agreed on a £30 million price, but he preferred to battle for his spot at Old Trafford.
