News Update

Mason Greenwood: It would be’very surprised’ if Manchester United’s forward moved to Saudi Arabia.

Greenwood, 21, will depart Manchester United by mutual consent following a six-month internal probe into his behavior.

This summer, Saudi teams have spent heavily on big-name acquisitions, and Greenwood has been mentioned internally.

However, the league believes it would be the wrong option at this time.

In Saudi Arabia, the league does the bidding or contract for players before allocating which club they will play for, which differs from other countries.

The Saudi Women’s Premier League also had its maiden season last year.

Women’s football in Saudi Arabia is “breaking records,” according to Lamia Bahaian, the first female vice-president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (Saff).

Last year, the Saff saw an 86% increase in registered female players, while the number of women’s clubs nationwide increased by 56%.

“The government has created a women’s league, which is about to begin its second season on October 11,” the insider stated. That is also a significant distinction since it is viewed as affecting the entire community.

“That is a remarkable transformation; women’s football was previously frowned upon; now there is a national team with a Fifa ranking.”

“Women are playing without head coverings, and male fans are in the stands; that is a significant cultural shift.”

Meanwhile, Al-Ettifaq manager Steven Gerrard has dismissed rumours that his club is interested in signing Greenwood as “fake news” on Instagram.

What became of Greenwood?

Monday Night Club: Adam Crafton claims Manchester United’s choice on Greenwood was a “PR nightmare.”
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 as a result of charges involving internet content.

On February 2, 2023, charges against the 21-year-old England international, including attempted rape and violence, were dropped.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him resuming his career at Manchester United,” United stated in a statement on Monday.

“It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

Last week, a group of female United fans demonstrated outside Old Trafford before the Wolves game, demanding that the club “demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach” to violence against women.

Female Fans Against Greenwood’s Return issued a long statement claiming that Greenwood’s reintegration would send the message that “as women, we don’t matter.”

Greenwood admitted to making “mistakes” on Monday, but said, “I did not do the things I was accused of.”
