The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) banned the 23-year-old on Thursday for violating betting rules.
Tonali will also take part in “a therapeutic plan” to aid in “recovery from gambling addiction,” according to the FIGC.
According to a Newcastle statement, the Italy international will be ready to resume competitive football on August 7, 2024.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe stated on Friday morning that Tonali was in contention to play in the Premier League against Wolves on Saturday since the club had not received confirmation of the ban.
However, on Friday evening, the world governing body Fifa announced that it had approved the FIGC’s request to have the ban extended globally.
Newcastle United said on Saturday: “Sandro Tonali has been banned from competitive football for 10 months, as effective from Friday, 27 October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian Football Federation.”
Tonali was fined 20,000 euros (£17,380) by the FIGC for violating a rule that prevents players from betting on football competitions organized by the FIGC, Uefa, and Fifa.
The federal prosecutor and Tonali agreed to an 18-month disqualification, with eight months remitted.
Tonali will take part in “a therapeutic plan and educational program in Italy consisting of 16 commitments,” according to Newcastle.
