Mason Mount: Erik ten Hag’s plans at Manchester United were a big part of his £55 million move from Chelsea.

Ten Hag’s first signing of the summer is the 24-year-old midfielder, who is part of a deal worth an initial £55m plus a possible $5m in add-ons.

Mount has signed a contract for five years, with a chance for an extra year.

“I couldn’t be more excited for the upcoming seasons after meeting with the manager and talking about his plans,” said England international Mount.

What will Mount give Man Utd that makes him “an exceptional player”?
Ten Hag is in a tough spot when it comes to transfers this summer. “Everyone can see that the club has made a lot of progress under Erik ten Hag. I have a lot of ambition. I know how great it is to win big prizes and what it takes to get there. I would do anything to have that happen to me again at Manchester United.”

Before a deal was made, United made three offers for Mount that Chelsea turned down. Last season, the London club spent $600 million, so it had to sell in order to meet Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

They didn’t want to lose a player who had been with them since he was six, but they couldn’t get him to sign a new contract before his old one ran out next year.

“Leaving the club where you grew up is never easy, but Manchester United will be a fun new challenge for the next part of my career,” Mount said.

“I’ve played against them before, so I know what a strong team I’ll be joining. I can’t wait to be a part of this group’s drive to win big trophies.”

Mount has scored 33 goals in 195 games for Chelsea since he made his adult debut in 2019. He missed the end of the domestic season because of an injury, which was the Blues’ worst finish in more than 25 years.
