Phil Neville: Following backlash, the Portland Timbers manager wants to meet the MLS team’s supporters.

After taking heat for previous divisive remarks he made about women on Twitter, Phil Neville, the new head coach of the Portland Timbers, says he wants to meet the team’s supporters.

A fan group expressed its “deep disappointment” in the club’s association with Neville prior to his appointment, citing his “history of sexist statements.”

Neville apologized for his remarks he made in 2018 about leading England’s women in football.

“In a press conference on Tuesday, I want to get to know the Timbers Army and I want them to get to know me,” he stated.

“The big part of this city is the supporters, and the statement they put out showed that this club cares about their people.”
