The Liverpool captain is given an additional one-match suspension for his response to being sent off against Newcastle.

Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool, was given an additional match’s suspension and fined £100,000 after acknowledging that his behavior after receiving a red card during a victory at Newcastle United was unprofessional.

In the 28th minute, the defender was dismissed for tripping Alexander Isak.

Before leaving the field, Van Dijk looked to argue with referee John Brooks.

He will not be available to play against Wolves on September 16 due to his suspension from the match against Aston Villa on September 3.

According to a statement from the FA, “the defender admitted that he behaved improperly and used abusive and insulting language towards a match official after being dismissed in the 29th minute. The sanctions were then imposed by an independent regulatory commission.”
