According to Spain’s Prime Minister, Luis Rubiales’ apologies for kissing Jenni Hermoso was “insufficient.”

Following Spain’s 1-0 victory against England in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, Spanish Football Federation President Rubiales kissed forward Hermoso.

On Monday, Rubiales apologized and admitted he was “completely wrong.”

“What we saw was an unacceptable gesture,” stated Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday.

“Rubiales’ apologies are insufficient, and I believe they are inadequate.” He must continue to take steps to clarify what we all seen.

“The players did everything they could to win, but Rubiales’ behavior demonstrates that equality still has a long way to go.”

Yolanda Diaz, Spain’s second deputy prime minister, has asked for Rubiales’ resignation.

“Their excuses are useless,” she remarked.”[The Spain squad] has taught us a lot about equality, not just in sports and football.”

“They have shown us that there is still a lot to be done in our country, a lot to be done so that men and women can become equal.”

Hermoso stated on Instagram that she “didn’t like” Rubiales’ conduct following the final, but a statement issued later on his behalf supported him.

Rubiales stated in a video aired on Monday, “It was without malice at a time of great excitement.” We thought it as natural at the time, but a clamor has formed outside.

“I have to apologise, learn from this, and understand that when you are president, you have to be more careful.”

Rubiales was also chastised by other Spanish government officials and faced backlash on social media for groping and kissing Hermoso.

“It’s a form of sexual violence that women suffer on a daily basis,” said Spain’s equalities minister Irene Montero, while sports minister Miquel Iceta told Spanish public radio that Rubiales kissing Hermoso was “unacceptable.”

After the game, video footage circulated online showing Rubiales, who was seated in the VIP section of the stadium near Fifa president Gianni Infantino and Queen Letizia of Spain, grasp his groin as he celebrated the final whistle.
