Coco Gauff defeats Caroline Garcia to go to the semi-finals of the China Open.

The 19-year-old American beat Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-4 in Beijing after winning her first major title at the US Open in September.

The world number three will play Swiatek, who is ranked second after battling back from defeat against Caroline Garcia.

Garcia was two points away from victory but fell 6-7 (8-10) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Aryna Sabalenka faces Elena Rybakina for a spot in the final four, where she might face Jelena Ostapenko or Liudmila Samsonova.

Gauff’s victory run is the longest on the WTA Tour in 2023, and she has not been defeated since a quarter-final loss to Jessica Pegula at the Canadian Open on August 11.

She has subsequently won her first WTA 1,000 title in Cincinnati and her first Grand Slam in New York, winning 21 of 22 matches since losing in the first round at Wimbledon.

Gauff beat Sakkari in one hour and 20 minutes and did not drop a single serve.

Swiatek, who was supplanted as world number one by Australian Open champion Sabalenka following the Belarusian’s march to the US Open final, did not have it as easy.

The 22-year-old four-time major winner remained calm when Garcia rallied from four points down to tie the second-set tie-break at 5-5.

Swiatek won the following two points to force a decider, which was a one-sided push to the end in contrast to the first two sets.
