After shooting a teenager who rang his doorbell, a US man in Missouri brought himself in to face assault charges.

Prosecutors said Andrew Lester, 84, was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal activity.

Last Thursday night, Mr Lester, who is white, allegedly shot Ralph Yarl, 16, who is black, once in the head and once in the arm. The boy was saved.

According to a prosecutor, there was a “racial component” to the shooting.

Mr. Lester has not been charged with a hate crime, and the charging documents make no mention of the alleged racial bias.

According to the sheriff’s office, he will be held at the Clay County Detention Center until his arraignment or until he posts bond.

Mr Yarl told detectives that he had erroneously approached Mr Lester’s home last Thursday night to pick up his younger twin siblings, instead driving to Northeast 115th Terrace, which is one block away.
